Prasadams play a fundamental part of religious traditions in India and temples of South India take the lead in the race. Everyday an array of traditional platters are prepared with love and devotion by trained temple staffs and is offered to the presiding deity of the temple.

Here’s a list of legendary temples of South India that have stood the test of time for their unique prasadams made of healthy and tasty ingredients for treating the holy being:

 

  1. Azhahar Kovil, Tamil Nadu- Situated at a distance of about 21 Km from Madurai, this temple is known for its offering of dosas made of rice and pulses for the deity. The farmers of this part of Tamil Nadu harvest rice and pulses round the year and prepare dosas as prasadam of the deity for all devotees.
  2. Sabarimala Ayyappan Temple, Kerala- The famous temple of India is known for its unique preparation of prasadam for the deity. There are two kinds of prasadams offered to the deity of Ayyappan Swami- one is Appam and the other is Aravana Payasam.
  3. Tirupati Balaji, Andhra Pradesh- This world-famous site of pilgrim owes a share of its repute to the laddoos served as prasadam to Lord Venkateshwara, the presiding deity of the temple. The sumptuous menu of the Tirupati Balaji Temple constitutes Puliogare (Tamarind Rice), Daddojanam (Curd Rice), Vadaa and Sakkarai Pongal (Sweet Pongal), Murukku, Miryala Pongal, Appam, Jalebi, Payasam, Malhora, Dosa and Seera (Rawa Kesari).
  4. Dhandayuthapani Swami Temple, Tamil Nadu- The prasadam offered to Lord Murugan in this temple is considered to be the most ancient and purest form of jam eaten by us. The delectable prasadam is prepared with a healthy combination of five fruits, jaggery and sugar candy which gives it a distinct flavour and is packed with essential nutrients
  5. Brihadeeshwara Temple, Thanjavur- As you enter the temple premises, advance straight to the canteen of this 1000 year old Chola temple and manage to get hold of a portion of tamarind rice (Puliogare). Brihadeeshwara Temple is famous for their unique style of preparing Puliogare and one serving will certainly appease your taste buds and satiate your hunger pangs.
